Protect Christians in India!
Offener Brief an den indischen Premierminister Dr. Manmohan Singh
Dear Prime Minister,
I am extremely concerned about the violence against Christians in several Indian states. Especially in Kandhamal district, in the state of Orissa, anti-Christian violence escalated in recent weeks. At least 50 Christians were killed by Hindu fanatics - many of them burnt alive. 4.300 houses were destroyed and more than 50.000 people displaced.
You have stated that violence against Christians is unacceptable and that local governments must ensure law and order. However, deadly attacks continue.
I urge your government to vigorously combat such violence and bring the perpetrators to court. Please arrest and punish also those who incite violence against religious minorities and impose a ban on extremist organizations and parties which promote hate and violence.
Last year, a fanatic Hindu mob attacked a peaceful Christian community in Brahminigaon/Orissa who was just preparing to celebrate Christmas, on the morning of 24th December 2007. Please assure that this will not happen again this year, and take appropriate measures to protect the threatened Christian communities from further attacks, especially during the Christmas days.
Yours sincerely,
Martin Rzeszut, Kiel, Germany
